Regarding the Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development Report – The Road Ahead: Encouraging The Production And Purchase Of Zero-Emission Vehicles In Canada.

April 15, 2021 STATEMENT

Statement by Brian Kingston, President & CEO of the Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers’ Association

“The shift to electric vehicles is well underway globally and in Canada. Over the past 8 months CVMA members have announced investments of $5.7 billion in Canada, including to build electric vehicles.

“We welcome recommendations in the report that will help to boost consumer adoption, and which are relevant to the marketplace realities. This includes enhanced consumer purchase incentives, continued investments in expanding charging infrastructure and public education efforts.

“With new electrified models across all segments announced and coming to market, the debate over ZEV supply is over; government must now focus on supporting consumer adoption.”

“The success of Canada’s automotive industry depends on ongoing regulatory harmonization with the United States. Policy alignment and collaboration with the United States is critical for Canada to achieve greenhouse gas reductions, accelerate North American electric vehicle technology development and boost consumer uptake.”
