CVMA statement on Chinese EV tariffs
Statement by Brian Kingston, President & CEO of the Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers’ Association:
“Today’s federal government announcement to implement tariffs on Chinese manufactured EVs and limit purchase incentives to products made in free trade agreement partner countries is a welcome step in support of the significant automotive investments that have been made in Canada supporting hundreds of thousands of good jobs.
“Given the highly integrated nature of the automotive industry across North America, alignment with the U.S. on the approach to China is fundamental to its continued success. With an upcoming review of the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement in 2026 there is simply too much at stake for the automotive industry and broader economy if Canada is misaligned.
“We applaud the government for recognizing the importance of alignment and look forward to additional details in support of Canada’s emerging EV ecosystem.”
