CVMA Statement on changes to the Québec zero-emission vehicle standard
Statement by Brian Kingston, President & CEO of the Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers’ Association:
“We welcome today’s announcement that Québec is adapting to new automotive market realities by recognising that the province’s zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) sales targets are unattainable.
“The adjustments announced are appreciated but more urgent action is needed. Unrealistic sales targets are forcing automakers to restrict internal combustion engine vehicle sales in the province. The result is fewer vehicle choices, higher prices, and dealership job losses. This may lead consumers to delay new vehicle purchases, keeping older, less efficient vehicles on the road, undermining the very GHG reduction goals these policies aim to achieve.
“The ZEV standard should be urgently repealed or paused to allow the government and automotive industry time to develop a more realistic adoption pathway that reflects market realities. Now is the time for a pragmatic approach that focuses on efforts to boost demand for ZEVs.”
