Excitement Builds for the Canadian International Auto Show.

February 17, 2012 PRESS RELEASE

Canadian vehicle manufacturers are welcoming the public to the 39th Annual Canadian International Auto Show, starting today at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. For the next 10 days, thousands of auto enthusiasts will be treated to the newest and best that the industry has to offer, including many models built right here in Ontario.

“With increasing sales and production in Canada, automakers are making strong contributions to the ongoing economic recovery,” said Mark Nantais, president of the Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers’ Association. “The auto show is an exciting celebration of this success as Canadian-based manufacturers take centre stage with exciting new models and advanced technologies”.

In 2011, Canadian vehicle production increased to over two million vehicles, and Canadian sales were also very strong. The Canadian auto manufacturing industry contributes 22% of Ontario’s manufacturing Gross Domestic Product and 11% nationally. For every auto assembly job there are seven other jobs created, and there are approximately 500,000 Canadians across the country directly or indirectly employed by the auto industry.

“While the positive news has been encouraging, we must build on our successes and improve competitiveness to ensure Canada continues to play an important role as manufacturers bring forward the next generation of advanced technologies and environmentally friendly vehicles,” added Nantais.
