PRESS RELEASE

Canadian Auto Smog Emissions Reduced Further.

Toronto, ON – 2007-07-23

Environment Canada’s recently released report on Fleet NOx Emission Performance for the 2005 Model Year confirms smog forming emissions from all light duty vehicles in Canada are on a rapid decline and new cars and light duty trucks sold in Canada outperformed the stringent regulatory requirements by 25%.

Many Canadians are not aware of how clean new cars have become.  Emissions from all the cars and light duty trucks in Canada represent about 10% of all Canadian smog forming emissions and are predicted to continue to decline well into the future. (Reference: http://www.ec.gc.ca/pdb/cac/Emissions1990-2015/emissions_e.cfm)

“Environment Canada’s Tier 2 vehicle emissions standards (introduced in 2004) are the most stringent national smog forming emissions standards in the world.  As new vehicles replace older vehicles on Canadian roads, total auto emissions are projected to decline by a further 50% by 2015 resulting in light duty vehicles representing less than 5% of total Canadian smog emissions”, said Mark Nantais, President of the Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers’ Association.  Nantais continued, but we are not stopping there.  The auto industry has presented the government with an integrated plan to further accelerate the reduction of both smog-related emissions and greenhouse gases from vehicles on Canadian roads.”

David Adams, President of the Association of International Automobile Manufacturers of Canada noted that, “the Canadian new vehicle fleet is significantly cleaner and ahead of schedule in meeting the very stringent requirements for Canada’s emissions regulations.  The auto industry cares about clean air and is committed to doing its part to ensure that Canadians are able to reap the benefits from harmonization with the most stringent standard for smog-causing emissions in the world.“

Together CVMA and AIAMC represent all of Canada’s automobile manufacturers and distributors of light duty vehicles.
