CVMA PRESS RELEASE

Canada’s Auto Industry: Advanced Technologies and Environmental Leadership.

Toronto, ON – 2006-02-14

Canada’s auto industry will showcase a large number of new product models and future concept vehicles packed to the brim with advance technologies and alternative fuel options which demonstrate their commitment to reducing fuel consumption and reducing emissions. Consumers will be intrigued and truly excited by what new products are coming their way in the market place.

Backgrounder: List of technologies and vehicle application.

Backgrounder: Association CVMA and AIAMC.
Mark Nantais, President of the Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers’ Association stated that “today’s advanced technologies, including gasoline-electric hybrids, continuously variable transmissions, cylinder deactivation, and advanced fuels, including ethanol and clean diesel, continue to be introduced on a greater number of vehicles each and every year.  Canadian consumers today have access to more than 70 vehicle technologies, all of which provide improved fuel savings, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and will contribute to cleaner air.”

David Adams, President of the Association of International Automobile Manufacturers of Canada commented that “the vehicles displayed by all auto makers during the Canadian International Auto Show are not only the cleanest to date, but also the safest ever made available to Canadian consumers”.  He added,” Consumer awareness and technology that is vastly superior to that of even a few short years ago, when coupled with cleaner fuels, will be the key to accelerating positive benefits for the environment.”

The new passenger vehicle fleet makes up approximately 8% of all vehicles on the road. One 1993 model year vehicle creates as much smog-related emissions as 12 current new model vehicles.  According to Environment Canada data, cars and light duty trucks make up less than 10% of total Canadian smog sources and are the only sources forecast to decrease over the next 15 years.

Together the AIAMC and the CVMA represent all of Canada’s automobile manufacturers and distributors of light duty vehicles.
