CVMA PRESS RELEASE

Auto Industry Applauds Government Action on Security and Prosperity.

Toronto, ON – 2005-06-27

The president of the association representing Canada’s largest manufacturers of light and heavy duty vehicles applauded the joint announcement today by the Governments of Canada, Mexico and the United States on the Security and Prosperity Partnership (SPP).

“Our industry has worked closely with the government to help prioritize key recommendations to assist in creating a more competitive manufacturing and sales environment in North American for automobiles. As one of the most important and integrated industries in North America, initiatives that move toward common regulations and regulatory processes in the three countries in both the vehicles we produce and sell increase our competitive strength. As part of this commitment, we must address existing inconsistencies between the signing countries and establish a process for the development of new regulations. Additionally, the commitment to further streamline and simplify border processing, while working closer together on perimeter and domestic security is an excellent building block from the Smart Border Accord. With the priorities and plans for action identified today under the SPP, it is clear that they understand the integration of our industry throughout the region and that they have listened to the specific needs of our industry,” said Mark Nantais, President of the Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers’ Association.

“These announcements represent an excellent first step for both the government and industry,” stated Nantais. “However, it is vital that the governments work closely with industry through the Automotive Partnership Council of North America, as was announced today, to further develop and implement the detailed plans for our security and prosperity as soon as realistically possible.”

The CVMA has a 79 year history of representing the Canadian automotive industry’s largest manufacturers.
