Auto Industry Looking Forward to the Implementation of Government Commitments at the Windsor-Detroit Gateway.
Toronto, ON 2005-04-22The president of the association representing Canadas largest manufacturers of light and heavy duty vehicles was encouraged by the announcement made in Windsor Ontario by the federal and provincial governments to move ahead with projects designed to implement interim improvements at the Windsor-Detroit Gateway.
Canada is the eighth largest vehicle producer in the world. The Canadian automotive industry exports roughly 87% of finished vehicles. said Mark Nantais, President of the Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers Association (CVMA), It is critical to the economic growth of Canada that all three levels of government, including the federal, provincial and municipalities, work together cooperatively in order to achieve the best solutions for all concerned. The previously released Schwartz Report created a solid foundation to improve the secure and efficient movement of goods and people through the Windsor border gateway, added Mr. Nantais.
Today it is estimated that the delays at the Windsor-Detroit crossing cost the province of Ontario $8.5 billion annually. Moving forward on these announcements will begin to address the costs which heavily impact the competitiveness of our industry. Working together on facilitating the legitimate flow of goods and people will mean greater prosperity and security for Canadians and competitiveness for Canadian industry. said Mr. Nantais. We must move forward as quickly as possible on any and all improvements including expediting the Bi-National Study where possible, concluded Mr. Nantais.
Approximately 75% of the 4880 trucks that DaimlerChrysler, Ford and General Motors send back and forth across the Canada U.S. border each day utilize the Windsor-Detroit border crossing.
The CVMA has a 79 year history of representing the Canadian automotive industrys largest manufacturers. The CVMAs members which include DaimlerChrysler Canada Inc.; Ford Motor Company of Canada, Limited; General Motors of Canada Limited, and International Truck and Engine Corporation Canada, account for more than 75% of all vehicle production in Canada. Both direct and spin-off employment in the automotive industry accounts for over 500,000 Canadian jobs.
