Auto Industry Applauds Release of Schwartz Report aimed at Windsor Border Traffic Improvements.
Toronto, ON 2005-01-21The president of the association representing Canadas largest manufacturers of light and heavy duty vehicles applauded the release of the report by Sam Schwartz for the City of Windsor aimed at border traffic solutions for Canadas busiest border gateway.
The automotive industry is encouraged that the City of Windsor has taken this important step by publicizing and asking for community input on this report. We believe that it is the most comprehensive and detailed report to be developed to date aimed at balancing the needs of local traffic while facilitating the movement of goods and people through the critical Windsor Detroit international border gateway. said Mark Nantais, President of the Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers Association.
The direction envisioned by this report for cross border traffic flows corresponds with the requirements that our industry has historically supported for improvements to this critical border gateway. Namely, this plan would create flexibility and redundancy, increase the roadbed of a number of the major arteries and potentially lay the groundwork to serve future border crossings, stated Nantais. In addition, this plan should assist with streamlining traffic so as to increase the benefits offered under the Free And Secure Trade (FAST) program, of which our members are the most active participants.
This is one step in the process towards real, and long overdue, infrastructure improvements in Windsor, and we encourage the federal and provincial governments to continue working closely with the region and City to work out the details of an implementation plan as soon as possible, added Nantais. We strongly support interim improvements designed to optimize existing crossing infrastructure that can be implemented while the Bi-National Review continues its work towards a much-needed new border crossing.
Approximately 75% of the 4880 trucks that DaimlerChrysler, Ford and General Motors send back and forth across the Canada U.S. border each day utilize the Detroit and Windsor border crossings. It is absolutely crucial for the automotive industry to be assured of border crossing reliability and predictability to accommodate just-in-time delivery on both sides of the border, stated Nantais.
The CVMA has a 78 year history of representing the Canadian automotive industrys largest manufacturers. The CVMAs members which include DaimlerChrysler Canada Inc.; Ford Motor Company of Canada, Limited; General Motors of Canada Limited, and International Truck and Engine Corporation Canada, account for more than 75% of all vehicle production in Canada, are Canadas largest merchandise importers and exporters, and directly employ over 50,000 Canadians.
