Federal Budget Confirms Importance of the Auto Industry.
Toronto, ON 2004-03-23Member companies of the Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers' Association (CVMA) congratulate the federal government and the Hon. Ralph Goodale, Minister of Finance, on their first budget and their support for the Auto Industry.
"We are pleased that the federal government has explicitly recognized the economic importance of the Canadian automotive industry in today's federal budget," noted Mark Nantais, President of the CVMA. He further indicated that, "The government's commitment to develop a new National Strategic Framework for our sector is essential to secure future growth in the automotive industry."
Industry representatives intend to work collaboratively with the federal government, to not only bring advanced technology vehicles to the marketplace, but also to establish appropriate mechanisms to attract new automotive assembly investment, which generates significant multiplier benefits across industry sectors.
The budget's reference to the government's commitment to life-long learning is also an important factor for the automotive industry.
A highly skilled and highly educated workforce is important for the high-tech automotive industry in Canada. The investments in our nation's human capital proposed in today's budget will assist the industry in building a comparative advantage, which can be used to attract new automotive investment to Canada.
