Auto Industry Applauds Government Action on Windsor Infrastructure Improvements.
Toronto, ON 2004-03-11The president of the association representing Canada's largest manufacturers of light and heavy duty vehicles applauded the joint announcement today by the Government of Canada, the Province of Ontario, and the City of Windsor concerning improvements to Canada's busiest border gateway.
"The automotive industry is pleased to hear that all levels of government involved at Canada's busiest border gateway have agreed on a plan that will begin a process towards greater facilitation of the movement of goods and people through the Windsor border gateway as well as improving the safety of the citizens of Windsor. This cooperative approach and short timelines for implementation signals that the three levels of governments can work together to find solutions for this critical border crossing" said Mark Nantais, President of the Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers' Association.
"This represents an excellent first step," added Nantais, "however it is vital that the three levels of government continue to work together to find additional solutions that will further improve access to the world's busiest border crossing."
Approximately 75% of the 4880 trucks that DaimlerChrysler, Ford and General Motors send back and forth across the Canada U.S. border each day utilize the Detroit and Windsor border crossing. "It is absolutely crucial for the automotive industry to be assured of border crossing reliability and predictability to accommodate just-in-time delivery on both sides of the border," stated Nantais.
The CVMA has a 78 year history of representing the Canadian automotive industry's largest manufacturers.
