Auto industry endorses government plan for infrastructure improvements.
Toronto, ON – 2003-05-28The president of the association representing Canada's largest manufacturers of light and heavy duty vehicles praised the announcement concerning the busiest border crossing in the world.
"The automotive industry strongly supports the infrastructure plan announced by the Government of Canada and the Province of Ontario, as it recognizes the critical national importance of the Windsor-Detroit border crossings for Canada's trade with the United States now and into the future. These investments will reduce traffic congestion in the short term and will form an effective platform for private sector partnerships to pursue additional border crossing infrastructure," said Mark Nantais, President of the Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers' Association.
"Approximately 75% of the 4880 trucks that DaimlerChrysler, Ford and General Motors send back and forth across the Canada – U.S. border each day utilize the Detroit and Windsor border crossing". It is absolutely crucial for the automotive industry to be assured of reliability and predictability with respect to border crossings to accommodate just-in-time delivery on both sides of the border," added Nantais.
The CVMA has a 77 year history of representing the Canadian automotive industry's largest manufacturers. The CVMA's members which include DaimlerChrysler Canada Inc.; Ford Motor Company of Canada, Limited; General Motors of Canada Limited, International Truck and Engine Corporation Canada and Volvo Cars of Canada Limited, account for more than 75% of all vehicle production in Canada.
