Key facts on the automotive industry in Canada.

Production
In 2007, Canadian auto assemblers produced 2,568,071 light duty vehicles. Of this total, CVMA members produced 1,803,625 or 71.4%. Canadian production of vehicles accounted for 16.6% of total North American vehicle production in 2007 – up from 15.96% in 2006.
In 2007, the vehicle sales to production ratio in Canada was 1.53. This means there were roughly 1.5 cars produced in Canada for every one sold. In 1999 when Canadian production reached 3.05 million units, the Canadian sales to production ratio almost reached 2 vehicles built for every one sold.
Canada is the 9th largest vehicle producing nation in the world.

Sales
In 2007, 1,653,362 vehicles were sold in Canada – 8.7% of total North American sales.
CVMA members accounted for roughly 53% of all vehicle sales in Canada or 869,791 units in 2007.
The average price of new light duty vehicles sold in Canada in 2007 was $31,875 down $732 from the 2006 average transaction price of $32,609. Roughly, 10% of all vehicle sales are cash purchases, 40% are leased, while 50% are purchased on loan.
There are over 19 million registered vehicles in operation in Canada.


GDP

The automotive industry is Canada’s largest manufacturing sector, accounting for roughly 12% of manufacturing GDP and over 2% of total industrial DGP.


Trade

Total automotive exports to all countries was $69.8 billion in 2007 accounting for 15.5% of total Canadian exports. Total automotive imports to all countries was $76.5 billion in 2007 accounting for 18.8% of total Canadian imports.


Employment

CVMA members directly employ over 100,000 Canadian men and women at their assembly plants, offices, and retail operations with another 50,000 retired Canadian employees.
Automobile parts and assembly manufacturing employs nearly 150,000 Canadians. This does not include the hundreds of thousands of additional Canadians who are employed by secondary suppliers such as plastics, oil & gas, steel, chemical, manufacturing.
The average salary of $72,000 in motor vehicle manufacturing is 60% higher than the average manufacturing wage in Canada.


Dealers

There are over 3,949 new vehicle dealers across Canada, of which CVMA members and their affiliates account for 55%.

Sourcing
Over $35 billion annually is sourced from Canadian suppliers by the global auto industry.
CVMA members purchase over 80% of the nearly $35 billion of annual Canadian parts production.


Investment

Since 2002, nearly $10.5 billion in automotive investment has been announced by Canada’s auto manufacturers and major parts producers. In this period, CVMA member companies announced investments of over $8 billion to secure and expand their various operations in Canada – which is nearly 80% of the total automotive investment in Canada.


Canada-U.S. Linkages

Two-way flow of trade between Canada and the United States represents largest bi-lateral trading relations in the world.
Over $1.58 billion a day in goods crossed our shared border in 2007 totaling over $573 billion for the year.
Roughly 85% of Canadian vehicle production and 60% of all parts production is exported to the United States.
In 2007, there was over $50 billion in exports of finished vehicles to the U.S., creating a surplus of $25 billion, 18.5% of Canada’s total trade surplus with the U.S.
65% of U.S. Tier 1 parts suppliers and 92% of Canadian Tier 1 parts suppliers are within 400 miles of the Detroit/Windsor border crossing.
